• Department of Medicine blood donor challenge benefits MGH patients
  One month after the MGH Department of Medicine issued a blood donation challenge to the residents and attending physicians within the department, a clear winner emerged. On June 16, Christopher Stowell, MD, PhD, and Walter Dzik, MD, co-directors of the MGH Blood Transfusion Service, presented a plaque to Hasan Bazari, MD, Internal Medicine residency director, to recognize the junior residents for donating the most blood to the MGH Blood Donor Center.

• Fun in the sun: MGHers enjoy annual summer picnic
  Despite the heat and humidity, MGH employees were treated to a well-deserved break at the annual summer picnic June 29, hosted by Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH. Employees, staff and volunteers enjoyed a picnic-style lunch provided by MGH Nutrition and Food Services, as well as carnival games and the tropical music of the Volume II Steel Band. But the main attraction was a special visit by Tedy Bruschi of the New England Patriots, who graciously shook hands and posed for photos with MGH fans.
  

• Radiofrequency ablation is effective long-term treatment for kidney tumors
  MGH researchers have shown that radiofrequency ablation (RFA) — a minimally invasive way of destroying tissue — is an effective, longlasting treatment for small kidney tumors in selected patients. In a followup to a 2003 study, the investigators found that RFA treatment of renal cell carcinoma, the most common kidney cancer, continued to be successful four to six years after administration.

• Honoring MGHers who work behind the scenes
  Workers from departments ranging from Buildings and Grounds to Parking and Commuter Services to the Warren Library took a well-earned respite from their jobs to attend Operations Support Staff Day June 23. The event honors staff who are not always recognized in the hustle and bustle of the MGH environment but who are integral to allowing the hospital to operate in a smooth and efficient manner.

• MGH Charlestown celebrates Bunker Hill Day
  To show their community spirit, the MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center participated in Bunker Hill Day festivities June 12 and 17. This past Bunker Hill Day — June 17 — was the 230th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill and honored the patriots who fought and died there.

• MGH Chelsea and Revolution players host soccer clinic
  The MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center and the New England Revolution soccer team hosted a soccer clinic at Chelsea High School June 7 for 100 students from the Chelsea public school system.

• MGH Chelsea helps kids keep safe this summer
  The MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center wants children to stay safe this summer, so to help
  educate the community about safety issues, the center hosted its annual Family Summer Safety Fair and Bike Rodeo June 18 in conjunction with the Chelsea River Revels/Chelsea Green Space 5K Road Race.
