  • MGH ranks third in best hospitals list
    U.S. News & World Report has released its much-anticipated “America's Best Hospitals” honor roll, ranking the MGH third in the nation. MGH Psychiatry again ranked first in the
    psychiatry category for the 10th year in a row. BWH also made the hospital honor roll, ranking 12th. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was ranked first overall, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., ranked second.
  • Clinical Research Day addresses translational challenges
    The challenge of applying discoveries from basic research labs to the treatment of patients and using findings from patient care to inform basic research set the theme of the third annual Clinical Research Day held June 28. In his welcome to participants in the day's activities, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, described how today's cutting-edge scientific advances offer new opportunities to researchers at academic medical centers like the MGH. “This is the place where new medical technologies meet the needs of our patients and their families,” he said.
  • Hasan named director of Office for Research Career Development
    Tayyaba Hasan, PhD, of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, has been named director of the new Office for Research Career Development (ORCD), part of the MGH Center for Faculty Development. Established to meet the needs and concerns of the hospital's growing research community that have been identified and discussed over the past four years, the ORCD began operation July 1.
  • MGH physician performs at Partners Night at the Pops 2005
    The eighth annual Partners Night at the Pops: A Celebration in Honor of Our Physicians was held June 25 at Symphony Hall. Led by Conductor Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra began the program with some patriotic tunes in celebration of the Fourth of July holiday and ended with a special performance by guest vocalist Sam Harris, star of Broadway, film and television.
  • MGH graduates urged to dream big
    For the 109 MGH employees being recognized by the MGH Workplace Education Program, their graduation day dawned perfectly — sunny and warm. The graduates, along with their families, friends and coworkers, sat under the Bulfinch tent during the 10th annual Celebration of Achievement ceremony June 24, eagerly waiting to accept their diplomas for their progress in one of six levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes.
  • Durante Awards honor true healers from MGH Cancer Center
    In recognition of their compassion, enthusiasm and commitment, two of the MGH's finest were honored June 27 with the Susan and Arthur Durante Award for Exemplary Care and Service with Cancer Patients. Constance Roche, RN, NP, of the Avon Foundation Comprehensive Breast Evaluation Center, and Edward Kielty, a technician for the Northeast Proton Therapy Center, received the annual award at a special ceremony in the O'Keeffe Auditorium.
  • Sleep and older adults
    It is a fact of life that everybody needs sleep. While the average adult needs approximately seven hours of sleep, some can function on less than five hours and others need nine hours or more. As adults get older, adequate sleep can be hard to achieve. To offer helpful tips to local seniors about sleep and sleep disorders, MGH Senior HealthWISE hosted “Sleep and Older Adults” June 28 in the Walcott Conference Rooms.
