• Leadership meeting focuses on operating budget, information systems and JCAHO lab survey
  Progress with finalizing the FY'06 operating budget process was the major topic of a hospitalwide leadership meeting July 11, with the most important news being the significant reduction of a $100 million budget gap to $9.5 million.

• MGH forum on disparities brings patients' voices to the forefront
  During the past few years, the MGH and the City of Boston have been committed to addressing racial and ethnic-based disparities — or differences — in access to and delivery of health care. To help educate the hospital community about this issue, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, and the MGH Committee on Racial and Ethnic Disparities hosted "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care: A Patient's Experience with Renal Transplantation" June 27 in the O'Keeffe Auditorium.

• JCAHO to survey lab areas
  The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has notified the MGH that a lab survey of the hospital's clinical testing areas will take place from Sept. 19 to Oct. 3. This 11-day visit will be conducted by one surveyor who will inspect the Pathology Service and any area of the hospital that performs tests. Visits will be made to the inpatient units, operating rooms and special function laboratories as well as potential visits to the WACC, the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care, the MGH health centers and CNY.
  

• Size of brain structure could signal vulnerability to anxiety disorders
  The size of a structure in the brain may be associated with the ability to recover emotionally from traumatic events. A new study by MGH researchers finds that area is thicker in individuals who appear better able to modify their anxious response to memories of discomfort.

• Sweet treats for blood donors
  The MGH Blood Donor Center sponsored a make-your-own ice cream sundae event July 1 and 5. Senior attending pharmacists Kelly Barnes, Bob Young and Michelle Chan set an example for fellow MGHers by collectively going as a department to donate blood.

• Good luck finds MGH Patriots fan
  Kirsten McQueen of the MGH Nuclear Medicine Department is the lucky winner of a pair of New England Patriots season tickets to see her favorite team.
