• Back-to-school: MGH employees benefit from tuition assistance
  As September approaches, many MGH employees will return to school to advance their skills or pursue a college degree. Among the concerns of many returning students is how to finance their education. As an advocate for career growth and education, the MGH aims to help employees who are current or aspiring students meet educational costs through its tuition assistance program.

• MGH Cancer Center receives donations to help battle sarcoma
  The MGH Cancer Center recently received two generous donations from families of former patients to help battle sarcoma — a rare and devastating form of cancer that affects
  the connective tissue. Both donations will benefit sarcoma research conducted by David Harmon, MD, of the MGH Hematology/Oncology Unit.

• Step by step: Bigelow 11 marathon
  The second annual Bigelow 11 marathon recently was held, and staff members clocked more than 1,000 miles by tracking the distance that they walked at work over the course of the month. Each participant used a personal pedometer to document mileage, and donations poured in from colleagues, friends and family members.

• MGH Chelsea physician receives top honor
  Tom Sterne, MD, medical director for the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center, recently was awarded the Outstanding Massachusetts Community Health Center Physician Award by the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (MLCHC) at their annual gala held at the Seaport Hotel.

• Partners and Blue Cross and Blue Shield team up to support comprehensive health reform
  More than 300 Partners HealthCare employees have responded to a call to become
  active in advocating for comprehensive health care reform in Massachusetts this fall. Partners and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts are working together to promote comprehensive health care reform to expand coverage for the uninsured, manage costs and provide fair reimbursement to providers caring for Medicaid and uncompensated care pool patients.

• Collecting cans for a cure
  While many of her peers are enjoying a summer of leisure, 12-year-old Meaghan Finn is doing her part to help find a cure for breast cancer. The seventh grader wanted to make a difference in the lives of women with cancer after her mother's friend and a next-door neighbor were diagnosed with breast cancer.

• MGHer awarded National Case Manager of the Year
  Peter Moran, RN, a case manager in MGH Emergency Services, recently was the recipient of the 2005 National Case Manager of the Year Award given by the Case Manager Society of America (CMSA) at the National CMSA conference in Orlando, Fla. The award recognizes an individual whose notable contributions, leadership qualities and exceptional dedication have provided a positive vision for the future in the field of case management.
