• Lab services under the microscope: JCAHO lab survey coming next week
  Many MGH employees and staff who are involved with lab functions have been busy preparing for the Sept. 19 through Oct. 3 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) survey of the hospital's laboratory services. The scope of the survey will include inpatient and outpatient areas and the Emergency Department, in addition to Pathology Services and other areas that perform lab tests.

• Paintings in unexpected places brighten patients' rooms
  Kelly Perfetti, RN, a staff nurse on the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), wanted to make the patients on her unit more comfortable and give them a break from looking at a plain, white ceiling. She embarked on a project to put artwork on ceiling tiles over patients' beds to give them something uplifting to look at during their hospital stay.

• AMMP scholarships awarded to deserving MGHers
  “This year's advertisement for the AMMP awards ceremony begins, 'Balancing a full work and school life is not an easy thing to do. It takes dedication, energy and perseverance.' This statement truly exemplifies the determination that our scholarship recipients show in pursuit of their educational and career dreams,” said Charmain Jackman, PhD, scholarship chair for AMMP — the Association of Multicultural Members of Partners — at the organization's scholarship awards ceremony.

• Nominations for the Nathaniel Bowditch Prize
  The MGH Board of Trustees and the Nathaniel Bowditch Prize Selection Committee now are seeking nominations for the 2006 Nathaniel Bowditch Prize. The $5,000 award will be presented to an MGH employee or team — clinicians or nonclinicians — who have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of care at the hospital while reducing the cost of such care.

• MGH Intranet redesigned
  The MGH Intranet recently has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly. The multiple categories have been eliminated, and all links now can be found under either “In the News” or “Resources.”

• Many resident physicians feel unprepared to care for culturally diverse patients
  Many resident physicians responding to a national survey do not feel prepared to address issues they commonly face in caring for patients from different cultural backgrounds. Most report receiving little or no training in providing cross-cultural care during their residencies, and fewer still say they were evaluated on cultural aspects of their patient communication skills.

• MGH Chaplaincy reflects on Sept. 11
  The MGH Chaplaincy Department held a service of music and meditation in remembrance of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, in the MGH Chapel Sept. 9.
