• Fiesta time: MGH celebrates fifth annual Latino Heritage month
  Latino Heritage month kicked off at the MGH Sept. 15 with a celebration featuring speakers, artwork, ethnic food and salsa dancing lessons. The MGH community gathered in the O'Keeffe Auditorium to hear guest speakers Marcela G. Del Carmen, MD, of MGH Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Cancer Center, and Uri Berenguer-Ramos, the Spanish announcer for the Red Sox who is currently the youngest announcer in the Major League.

• And the winner is ...
  While the MGH had the largest percentage of employees who donated during the fifth annual Employee Blood Donor Challenge between the MGH and BWH, the real winners are the many patients at both hospitals who received much-needed blood products during the last month. The challenge — which spanned from Aug. 23 to Sept. 9 — resulted in the MGH achieving 98 percent of its goal during the three-week period.

• Fourth MGH group deployed to Gulf Coast
  While three teams of MGH employees already have been deployed to bring aid to the areas of the Gulf Coast that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, a fourth team of nine physicians, three nurses and one mental health clinician left Sept. 19 for a two-week deployment.

• Increasing ovarian cancer awareness
  The MGH Cancer Center, the Ovarian Cancer Education Awareness Network (OCEAN) at the MGH, the Massachusetts Division of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Inc. (NOCC) and the M. Patricia Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer, Inc., all share the common goal of increasing awareness about ovarian cancer.

• MGHers commit to Be Fit: Third phase of program launched
  The Clinics Amphitheater was jam-packed Sept. 20 with an excited crowd of MGHers who pledged to spend the next 10 weeks learning how to eat healthy and exercise more effectively with the hospital's Be Fit program. Now in its third phase, the Be Fit program is sponsored by the Clubs at Charles River Park and MGH Nutrition and Food Services and is meant to help six teams of MGH employees embark on a life-long journey of living a healthier lifestyle.

• Keep your iPods to yourself
  There now are different versions of these small devices that can contain thousands of downloaded songs — the original iPod, the iPod Shuffle and the iPod Nano. All of these tiny entertainment centers range in price from $100 to $500, making them not only valuable to their owners but also enviable items for potential thieves.

• Friends with Hope provide support for breast cancer research
  Barbara Smith, MD, PhD, director of the Gillette Center for Breast Cancer at the MGH Cancer Center, recently received a $20,000 donation from the “Friends with Hope” organization to support her breast cancer research. The money was raised through the organization's annual 5k walk and a dinner/dance charity event.

• MGHers walk for a cause close to their hearts
  More than 130 MGHers donned their sneakers and MGH T-shirts Sept. 17 despite the threat of inclement weather to participate in the Boston Heart Walk. The MGH team raised more than $40,000 to help increase awareness and money for cardiac care and research for the American Heart Association (AHA).
