• Leadership meeting introduces Simches Research Center
  The official introduction of the new Richard B. Simches Research Center at Charles River Plaza was the focus of the quarterly leadership meeting Sept. 26. Hospital managers, supervisors and department heads gathered in the centerÕs main conference room to hear more about this state-of-the-art research facility that bears the name of a former MGH patient.

• Supporting a good cause: United Way campaign coming soon
  A familiar event will once again take place throughout the hospital later this fall — the annual MGH United Way campaign. The campaign will begin with a kickoff celebration Oct. 25 at 11:30 am under the Bulfinch tent and will run through Nov. 4. Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, and Nancy E. Corbett, senior administrative director for Radiation Oncology — co-chairs of this year's campaign — are committed to making it a resounding success..

• MGH wage and salary program announced
  The MGH this week announced the fiscal year 2006 wage and salary program effective Sept. 25 that includes a performance-based increase ranging up to 4 percent. This year's General Hospital program is funded at 3 percent. Those who are above the maximum of their pay range are eligible for a bonus of up to 3 percent. A completed performance appraisal is required before any increase or bonus is processed.

• Having a ball at the ballpark
  The famous wall of the Green Monster provided a dramatic backdrop to this year's Storybook Ball benefiting MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHC). The annual gala has become one of the premiere events in Boston, and this year's sold-out fete at Fenway Park lived up to its reputation, raising more than $2 million dollars for MGHC.

• MGH launches magazine that examines medicine's leading edge
  The MGH this week launched Proto: Dispatches from the Frontiers of Medicine, a national quarterly magazine that explores the latest developments in biomedical research, promising clinical applications and health policy.

• Celebrating Women in Medicine month
  In commemoration of Women in Medicine month, the Office for Women's Careers held a screening of highlights from the PBS documentary “If Women Ruled the World” Sept. 19 in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. The documentary — a two-hour special featuring a 1999 dinner party in Washington, DC's Senate Caucus Room on Capitol Hill — celebrated women from diverse cultural, ethnic, generational and professional backgrounds.

• Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, domestic violence affects the workplace when an abuser harasses an employee who is on the job, when a victim is absent because of injuries or less productive because of stress, or when violence occurs at the worksite. The MGH is committed to helping employees and patients who are experiencing abuse through a variety of resources that are always available.

• National Physician Assistant Day
  For more than 30 years, physician assistants (PAs) have provided quality medical care and services as licensed practitioners who practice medicine with physicians in many types of health care settings. The importance of this profession's impact in the field of medicine has grown and will be recognized Oct. 6, when physician assistants from the MGH and throughout the country celebrate National Physician Assistant Day.
