• Employees bonus program highlights leadership meeting
  Updates on the hospital's clinical growth strategy and the status of the quality and safety
  initiatives were presented at the quarterly leadership meeting Nov. 2, with a much-anticipated announcement saved for last — the introduction of an employee bonus program.

• 'Tis the season for PIE — the Partners In Excellence awards ceremony
  It's that time of year when thoughts turn to PIE — apple, pumpkin and the Partners In Excellence (PIE) awards. MGHers are invited to join Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH; James Mongan, MD, president and CEO of Partners; and Jeff Davis, senior vice president for MGH Human Resources, in congratulating the recipients of the PIE Awards, Dec. 2, at 3 pm in the WACC Lobby.

• MGH stroke team receives Nesson Award
  The MGH Acute Stroke Service was presented with a Nesson Award for Innovation from Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI), at its recent annual meeting. Named for H. Richard Nesson, MD, PCHI's founder and the former president of Partners HealthCare, the awards are given annually to PCHI physicians and groups who exemplify Nesson's commitment to improving care.

• MGHers win International Sharps Injury Prevention Award
  Brian French, RN, professional development coordinator for the MGH Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development, and Susan Loomis, RN, director of Occupational Health for Partners HealthCare, have been selected as two of the six winners of the 2005 International Sharps Injury Prevention Award.

• MGH proton therapy center now carries the name of a trusted friend
  In a moving ceremony held Nov. 1, the MGH Northeast Proton Therapy Center was renamed the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center in honor of Francis “Hooks” Burr, who devoted more than 40 years of his life to shaping and strengthening the MGH. Burr served as an MGH trustee from 1962 to 1987, as chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1987 and as an honorary trustee until his death in 2004.

• MGH leaders head back to school
  Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, and David F. Torchiana, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, took a break from their daily routines Nov. 1 to participate in the Boston Plan for Excellence's Principal for a Day program.

• Build-A-Bear party brings new friends to pediatric patients
  Stuffed teddy bears, dogs, elephants and cats came to life as treasured friends at the third annual Build-A-Bear for MGH party held Oct. 23, at the Build-A-Bear store at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Mass.

• MGH blood donor receives a special thank-you
  For the donors of the MGH Blood Donor Center, the knowledge that a gift of blood will help another person is a reward in itself. However, for Paula Wright, RN, of the MGH Infection Control Unit, a donation this past summer brought an unexpected bonus — a pair of roundtrip tickets to any destination served by Independence Air.
