• A decade of compassion — Schwartz Center celebrates milestone anniversary
  It has been 10 years since health care lawyer Ken Schwartz died of lung cancer at age 40. Shortly before his death, Schwartz wrote an article that appeared in the Boston Globe Magazine describing his struggle with the illness and his relationship with his care providers. In that article, Schwartz detailed his interactions with his doctors, nurses, therapists and other caregivers and how their open, compassionate and human relationships with him helped him through his darkest moments.

• Pediatric memorial service provides comfort and support
  Families, friends and members of the MGH staff joined together in the O'Keeffe Auditorium Nov. 14 for the 14th annual Pediatric Memorial Service to honor children who have lost their lives and provide comfort and support to the families and staff who loved them.

• POE-CBORD communication protects patients
  With much fanfare the MGH welcomed a new communication vehicle between the Provider Order Entry (POE) system and CBORD — the computer system MGH Nutrition and Food Services uses — at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception held Oct. 27 in the Trustees Room.

• Simches Center hosts employee reception
  The MGH hosted a reception for employees and staff at the Richard B. Simches Research Center Nov. 15 to celebrate the opening of the facility. Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH; David F. Torchiana, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization; and Richard Bringhurst, MD, senior vice president of Medicine and Research Management, welcomed the guests to the center.

• Art auction supports depression awareness
  The first MINDSCAPES Gala Art Auction debuted Oct. 15 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, raising nearly $120,000 for the MGH Depression Clinical and Research Program (DCRP). The concept of MINDSCAPES — promoting awareness for early identification and effective treatment of depression through art — was created by event co-chairs Stacy Sweeney and Wendy Tulman, both members of the DCRP Advisory Council.

• Eliminating health care disparities: Multicultural Advisory Committee established
  Since 2002, when Boston Mayor Thomas Menino convened Boston hospital CEOs to explore the role the hospitals were playing in eliminating health care disparities, the MGH has taken a leadership role in addressing this issue that often prevents minorities from receiving equal access to and the same quality of care as white Americans.

• A happy anniversary for first MGH heart transplant patient
  John A. Scripter, the first patient at the MGH to receive a heart transplant, celebrated a special anniversary at the beginning of November — the 20th anniversary of his new lease on life. On Nov. 4, Scripter and his wife Linda returned to the hospital for a routine checkup with his cardiologists.

• New tile wall is a mosaic of healing and caring
  Young patients, their parents and caregivers at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHC) have turned the family room on Ellison 17 into an artistic masterpiece with the recent addition of the Patient-Caregiver Tile Wall. Installed in August, the wall is comprised of individually hand-painted tiles, the first of which were painted in 2003.
