Holiday shopping helps cancer patients

MGHers got an early start on their holiday shopping at the 13th annual Friends of the MGH Cancer Center holiday fundraiser. More than 450 guests participated in the festivities held Nov. 17 at the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Prudential Center in Boston. Award-winning authors — including children's author Tomie dePaola, Boston Globe photographer Bill Brett, and author Linda Greenlaw, well-noted for her role in Sebastian Junger's book The Perfect Storm — were on hand for book signings, while a raffle featured prizes ranging from a Red Sox luxury box for 16 people to an island getaway vacation.

Proceeds from the event, which raised more than $300,000, will help the Friends of the MGH Cancer Center provide comfort, support, education and amenities to patients and offer grants to support programs benefiting cancer patients and their families.

Mother and daughter team Martha, left, and Linda Greenlaw sign copies of their new cookbook.
