Luther King remembered
MGHers gathered Jan. 13 to honor the life, work and legacy of Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr., at a special breakfast celebration "In the Spirit
of Unity and Service: Remember! Celebrate! Act!" in the East Garden
Dining Room. The event was sponsored and coordinated by the Association
of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) and emceed by Helen Witherspoon,
of MGH Training and Development and chairwoman of AMMP.
Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, welcomed the crowd and introduced
the event's keynote speaker, Milton J. Little, Jr., president and chief
executive officer of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay (below).
"We remember Dr. K ing
not because of what he did, but how he did it," said Little. "He
was a man of action. He acted, and the whole world acted. This is a day
to reaffirm that we all, as Americans and residents of the greater Boston
area, share a common vision, regardless of our differences."
The celebration also featured the enormously popular debut performance
of the Voices of MGH Choir, featuring songs such as "We are the Children
of One World," "Wade in the Water" and "Down by the
Riverside" to the enjoyment and enthusiastic applause of the crowd.
The choir is the brainchild of Witherspoon and Candace Burns of MGH Community
Benefits who co-direct the choir along with La Dawn Hicks-Breneus of MGH
Clinical Care Management.
