  • Me and my shadow
On Groundhog Day, a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil provides the annual forecast of spring's arrival, determining when the season will arrive based on the appearance of his shadow. Like the groundhog, the MGH has its own shadowing tradition — Groundhog Job Shadow Day. On Feb. 2, more than 20 students from East Boston High School (EBHS), the MGH's high school education partner, visited the hospital and learned about health care careers by "shadowing" hospital staff.
  • New location for Scientific Advisory Committee meeting
The new Simches Research Center will be the site of next week's activities for the annual meeting of the MGH Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC). The 30th research symposium and poster session will be held Feb. 15 followed by the 59th annual SAC meeting Feb. 16.
  • Parking in front garages made easier
MGH employees who park in the Fruit and Parkman Street garages on nights and weekends soon will be able to use their MGH ID badges as their parking access cards, eliminating the need for a separate access card.
  • Requests for security access goes electronic
To better serve the MGH and Partners community, MGH Police, Security and Outside Services is shifting from paper forms to electronic submissions for all employees who wish to have their photo ID badges programmed for access to secure/restricted areas.
  • MGH Anesthesia Department suppresses pain and paper paychecks
The staff of MGH Anesthesia and Critical Care recently joined many other hospital departments who have gone paperless with their paychecks. Employees in that department who have direct deposit are suppressing the weekly printing of the paper copies of their direct deposit advices.
  • Brady jerseys are prized possessions
Two MGHers now are the proud owners of coveted New England Patriots jerseys autographed by the team's star quarterback, Tom Brady. Denise Whall-Strojwas, RN, of the Gillette Center for Women's Cancers, and Janie-Marie Ruddock, registration coordinator for MGH Emergency Services, won the jerseys in a recent employee raffle, held Jan. 23 through 26.
  • New cash management system will streamline department deposits
Early this spring, the MGH will introduce a new cash management system to replace the Shared Hospital Accounting System (SHAS) program that currently is used to record cash receipts in the financial systems. The new system is part of the PeopleSoft software suite and will offer many advantages with minimal impact to employees.
  • MGHers wear red for healthy hearts
As the rest of the nation honored "Go Red" Day Feb. 3, MGHers did their part to support cardiovascular disease awareness in women by wearing many brilliant shades of red to work.
