Women
faculty at the MGH honored
The MGH hosted the ninth annual Office for Women's Careers (OWC) reception
May 25 to honor women physicians and scientists who have made significant
career achievements. At the event, attendees received special tribute
books, a compilation of some of the accomplishments made by women faculty
at the hospital. These accomplishments include academic and administrative
promotions, publications, new grants, and other honors and awards.
MGH leaders and staff gathered in the Thier Conference Room to congratulate
and recognize these women. Guest speaker Evelynn Hammonds, PhD, senior
vice provost for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard University,
was the keynote speaker. At Harvard, Hammonds has been charged with assessing
barriers to women faculty members' advancements at the university and
with creating strategies to address these issues.
Two of Hammond's key initiatives include increasing childcare options
for faculty and instituting the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium
to help address issues related to academic recruitment, particularly the
dual career challenge. Rebecca Starr, administrative director of the OWC
at the MGH, indicated that the
MGH would be a part of these efforts.
