• Middleton is a "cut above the rest" for MGHC patient
  For Ron and Kim Supino, of Middleton, Mass., their son's battle against cancer became the town's mission to help one of their own. Last month 7-year-old MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHC) patient Jack Supino was told that his stomachaches were caused by a form of cancer called neuroblastoma. In a major show of support for the young boy, the town of Middleton held a four-day "shave-a-thon." Twenty hairdressers converged at the local school expecting a few dozen supporters to show up and have their hair cut.

• MGH nurse in ad campaign
  MGH staff nurse Meg Soriano, RN, was featured in a full-page ad published in the Boston Globe July 11 that focuses on the issue of government-mandated ratios for nursing staff.

• MGH selected as a Best Employer for Be Fit program
  This June, the National Business Group on Health honored more than 30 U.S. employers — including the MGH — for encouraging healthy lifestyles for their employees. The MGH received a Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles Award in the Silver category, which recognizes employers that have initiated programs or services to promote healthier lifestyles.

• Sox fans give red for chance at prizes
  MGH Red Sox fans like Daniel Dolan of the PACU have received a special bonus for donating blood this week. As part of the Remy Report Blood Drive with the MGH and BWH held through July 14, donors have received an autographed Remdawg T-shirt and have been entered into a drawing for two tickets to a Red Sox game.

• Ojimba honored by Pope Benedict XVI
  Rev. Felix Ojimba, MGH chaplain, recently was elevated to monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI at an investiture ceremony held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Orlu, Nigeria.

• Safety first: Using patient identifiers
  An important component of patient safety is to identify patients accurately and match the patient's identity with the correct treatment or service. The fast-paced nature of medical care can sometimes cause challenging situations for clinicians to correctly identify patients when providing care. This is why the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has made patient identification the first of its National Patient Safety Goals.

• 'Tis the season for academic excellence
  The MGH and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) recently awarded several scholarships to high school seniors pursuing higher education in the field of health care.

• MGH wins Bell Ringer awards for Globe series
  The Publicity Club of New England recently presented the MGH with two Bell Ringer awards for the series "The Making of an ICU Nurse" that was published in the Boston Globe beginning Oct. 23 through Oct. 26, 2005.
