'Tis the season for academic excellence

The MGH and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) recently awarded several scholarships to high school seniors pursuing higher education in the field of health care.

The first scholarship was established in 2003 by the MGH and the MGH Community Benefit Program to honor Sen. Edward M. Kennedy for his dedication to health care and equal economic opportunity. This scholarship was created for ProTech graduates continuing their education in areas of health care. The following recipients were selected based on their high school academics and hospital internships: Dominica Campbell, Marc Fleury and Mireille Kamanzi.

This year MGH Patient Care Services and the MGPO established a scholarship named after Sarah Stowell, RN, the first African-American nurse to graduate from the MGH School of Nursing in 1953, and Chester M. Pierce, MD, a prominent MGH psychiatrist. These scholarships were awarded to the following Health Careers Academy graduates for academic merit and pursuit of higher education in nursing and other health care professions: Christina Joseph, Jaleesa Vazquez, Peggy Volcy, Sandra Otote, Jenny Bien-Aimé, Alicia Bramwell, Kendra Liburd, Jennifer Molina, Dominque Radden and Satie Shiwbodh.
