• The MGH makes $18.6 million commitment to community health
  In conjunction with the approval process for the Building for the Third Century (B3C), the MGH is making an $18.6 million commitment to improving the health of underserved communities in Massachusetts. The funding particularly will benefit populations in MGH service delivery areas such as Charlestown, Chelsea and Revere and will begin immediately.

• New bill addresses unequal access to health care
  A statewide coalition of health care advocates, providers, researchers and other community members gathered at the Massachusetts State House May 16 in support of a bill designed to improve health care access for racial and ethnic minorities.

• CPE graduates learn the spiritual side of care
  On May 24, the MGH Chaplaincy celebrated the art of spiritual and compassionate caregiving as the department honored the seven most recent graduates of the MGH Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for Healthcare Professionals program.

• MAO honors MGH minority graduates
  The Multicultural Affairs Office (MAO) recently celebrated the MGH residents' and fellows' graduation May 17 at the Museum of African American History. This year, there were 19 underrepresented minority (URM) residents graduating from 10 residency training programs, and over 70 URM faculty, trainees and their guests attended the event.

• Parkinson's disease patient discovers hidden talent
  Fourteen years ago, MGH patient Greg Rice (left) was a Fleet Boston senior executive leading an active and fulfilled life. Things changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a degenerative neurological disorder. Ten years into his illness, Rice's life shifted even more remarkably when he discovered an astonishing hidden talent — a gift for composing music despite no formal musical training.

• Score a touchdown for hand hygiene in slogan contest
  The MGH STOP (Stop Transmission of Pathogens) Task Force is sponsoring a contest to identify a slogan that employees can use to remind each other to practice proper hand hygiene.

• MGHers named winners of nursing excellence awards
  Two MGH nurses were named the New England regional winners of the 2007 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards at the magazine's May 15 Excellence Awards gala in Burlington.
