  • Rain doesn't dampen spirits at annual Employee Summer Picnic
A little rain didn't stop thousands of MGHers from flocking to the Bulfinch Tent and lawn for the annual Employee Summer Picnic June 20. Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, invited all employees, staff and volunteers to enjoy games, music and a Be Fit boxed lunch. A special visit from New England Patriots player Vince Wilfork completed the celebration with employees lining up for photos with him. "It's great to see everybody who works so hard have an opportunity to have some fun," said Wilfork.
  • Summer construction information
MGHers can expect to see a number of significant campus changes during the summer months, leading to the demolition of the Clinics, Tilton and Vincent Burnham Kennedy (VBK) buildings and the construction of the Building for the Third Century (B3C).
  • Behind-the-scenes take center stage on Operations Support Staff Day
Thousands of MGH operations support staff took a well-earned break from their work as they were treated to a special luncheon June 12 in honor of Operations Support Staff Day. The occasion honors the many contributions of the MGH's behind-the-scenes staff members who ensure that hospital operations run smoothly and efficiently each day. Along with the lunch catered by MGH Nutrition and Food Services, employees were given embroidered duffel bags as tokens of appreciation.
  • Inspiring discretionary effort
MGH leaders often desire to enhance the patient's experience at the hospital without knowing how to fully tap into one of the keys to achieving this goal — discretionary effort, which is the initiative, interest, motivation, dedication, commitment, enthusiasm and loyalty each employee possesses. Discretionary effort also is a critical success factor for managers, as it ensures that staff voluntarily express consistent responsiveness to patients and colleagues.
  • Joint Commission lab survey preparation
All MGH staff and employees — especially laboratory managers and staff, physicians, nurses and medical technologists — should be prepared for an unannounced Joint Commission laboratory survey to take place before Jan. 1, 2008. MGHers should consider it a hospitable inspection with a laboratory focus. The Joint Commission conducts its laboratory accreditation survey every two years. The inspection is independent from the recent hospital survey that took place in December. It centers on the inspection of processes and environments involved with lab testing, from point-of-care testing to laboratory work, with a focus on compliance with the 2007 Laboratory Services National Patient Safety Goals.
