Myers joins MGHfC Cardiac Surgery

Jeff L. Myers, MD, PhD, (left) has joined the MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) as chief of Pediatric Cardiac and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. Myers formerly served in a similar capacity at Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans. Following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Myers and his family relocated to Memphis, Tenn., where he was director of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.

At the MGHfC, Myers will lead an effort to develop the Pediatric Cardiac program in collaboration with Michael  de Moor, MD, chief of Pediatric Cardiology. Initiatives include the introduction of pediatric heart assist devices and pediatric heart transplantation, as well as the creation of a center for adults with congenital heart disease. Myers also plans to continue his clinical research at the MGHfC, focusing on pulmonary hypertension and the creation of a tissue-engineered heart valve.

Myers and de Moor recently had the opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to provide care to pediatric cardiac patients at Nairobi Hospital. Sponsored by the nonprofit organization Children’s Heartlink, Myers and de Moor performed open-heart surgeries, provided postoperative cardiac intensive care and educated Kenyans about dealing with cardiac emergencies.
