The MGH Blood Bank, which opened in 1942, was the first hospital-based blood bank in Massachusetts, and by 1952 had grown to be the largest hospital-based blood bank in New England. Now known as the MGH Blood Donor Center, the Blood Bank was first led by Lamar Soutter, MD, who was also the MGH’s first official blood donor. Today, the MGH transfuses more than 70,000 blood components each year.
