  • New employee bonus program debuts with hand hygiene as top priority
With fiscal year 2007 predicted to end with a strong financial performance, the MGH is again poised to offer employees a bonus program in appreciation of the incredible work they perform each day. This year’s program, however, will feature a change from previous years in that it will be linked directly to one of the MGH’s most crucial quality and safety standards – hand hygiene. At the MGH, hand hygiene is practiced by using Cal Stat, an alcohol-based hand disinfectant, before and after contact with the patient or patient’s environment.
  • Always prepared at the MGH
This month, the MGH joins organizations across the country in recognizing National Preparedness Month, a nationwide effort to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, workplaces and schools.

  • Charles Circle landmark revamped and ready
The new Liberty Hotel — formerly the Charles Street Jail — celebrated its grand opening with a reception Sept. 5 that featured speeches from special guests and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Adjacent to the MGH Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care, the four-star hotel is the result of seven years of planning by Boston developer Richard L. Friedman. In 2000, the MGH selected Friedman’s firm Carpenter & Company, Inc. to redevelop the property based on a long-term ground lease.
  • Vacanti awarded John Scott Medal
Past recipients of the John Scott Medal, awarded by the city of Philadelphia, are some of the greatest minds in history — Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, Jonas Salk and Guglielmo Marconi. Now the MGH’s very own Joseph P. Vacanti, MD, chief of Pediatric Surgery at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, can be counted among their ranks.
  • Food for Families
It is a surprising reality: The extent of hunger in Massachusetts has more than doubled what it was three years ago. Often, it is the children in low- income families who suffer most, having more health and behavioral issues than children who have enough food.
