Brown and Scadden elected to Institute of Medicine

scaddenFollowing a highly selective process that considers experts who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health, Emery N. Brown, MD, PhD, (below) director of the Neuroscience Statistics Research Laboratory at the MGH and member of MGH Anesthesia and Critical Care; and David T. Scadden, MD, (left) director of the MGH Center for Regenerative Medicine, have been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies. The IOM is both a research and an honorary membership organization that works outside the framework of the government to provide advice on national issues relating to biomedical science, medicine and health. Brown and Scadden are among 65 new members elected this year. In addition, the institute elected four foreign associates.

brownElection to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. Brown and Scadden join their IOM peers representing a broad range of fields from the health, natural, social and behavioral sciences; law; administration; engineering; and the humanities.

Collectively, members of the IOM serve as a national resource for unbiased, evidence-based and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policymakers, professionals, leaders and the general public. Members commit to serve on IOM committees, which engage in a diverse range of studies on health policy issues.
