MGPA: Showing postdocs the way
In the competitive world of professional medical research, postdoctoral fellowships have a reputation of being demanding experiences. These PhD-level positions usually are occupied by scientists just beginning their careers, and with the challenging workload come questions about career advancement. In 2006, several postdocs — as postdoctoral fellows often are called — came together to create the Mass General Postdoc Association (MGPA) to address these and other issues. A volunteer-run committee supported by the MGH's Office for Research Career Development, the MGPA focuses on four areas: career development, research advancement, communication and networking, and improving the quality of life and work for the MGH's 1,100 postdocs.
In addition to regular meetings, the group hosts mentored lunches, where postdocs can receive advice from career researchers; a variety of social functions; and orientations for new postdocs. Topics covered at the events include finding and applying for the right grant, settling into life in Boston and maintaining a proper work/life balance.

As further support for its cause, the group recently received a grant from the National Postdoctoral Association in Washington, D.C., following a competitive application process. The grant will provide MGH postdocs with development opportunities on topics related to the responsible conduct of research, communication skills for difficult situations and general career advancement.
