FOUNDED IN 2001 by three-time cancer survivor Dan Olsen, Christopher's Haven is a home away from home for children undergoing cancer treatment at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and their parents and siblings. The charity offers affordable, comfortable and fully furnished accommodations for families requiring temporary stays in Boston.
Conveniently located across the street from the main campus at One Emerson Place, the Christopher's Haven apartments first opened in 2006 with just one apartment. Thanks to generous support from friends and donors, the organization now fully occupies the entire second floor of the apartment building, having recently leased its seventh apartment.
Friends, supporters and MGHfC caregivers gathered Nov. 6 in the Christopher's Haven community room to celebrate the milestone. Olsen and Martha Welsh, Christopher's Haven executive director, welcomed guests and thanked them for their support and encouragement. Special guests included Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology; Jay Loeffler, MD, chief of Radiation Oncology; and Ronald Kleinman, MD, MGHfC physician-in-chief.
"Years ago, it was evident that pediatric cancer care at MassGeneral Hospital for Children was growing and would continue to do so," said Weinstein. "But there was a gap in our program. Families requiring temporary housing in Boston were finding it challenging to locate something affordable, comfortable and nearby. That's where Dan stepped in. It's hard to believe we didn't have Christopher's Haven before. It's been a dream come true. On behalf of the MGH and our patients and their families, thank you Dan and congratulations on this milestone occasion."
