The Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiology, which provides comprehensive imaging services under the banner of Massachusetts General Hospital Imaging, employs more than 100 board-certified radiologists specializing in 11 clinical areas and performs more than 600,000 imaging exams a year at Mass General and a network of community locations. With roots dating back to 1896 and the creation of one of the first X-ray images in the United States, the department boasts a long history of high-quality patient care. In addition, the department has played—and continues to play—a key role in advancing the state of the art in imaging technologies including CT (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), PET (positron emission tomography), and ultrasound, as well as minimally invasive, image-guided interventional procedures.
As part of one of the nation's premiere academic medical centers, teaching is a critical part of the Department of Radiology's charter. The department's rigorous and highly sought-after fellowships and residency program provide future radiologists with advanced, specialized training, and alumni of these programs can be found in high-level positions in prestigious radiology departments worldwide. In addition, the department offers a CME (continuing medical education) program featuring courses that attract participants and industry sponsors from around the world.
The department is also a world-renowned medical-imaging research organization that helps to advance the state of the art in clinical practice while nurturing tomorrow's life-saving breakthroughs. In addition to its own research, the department also provides imaging services in support of clinical trials and drug development.

The MGH Radiological Society has been organized to advance professional, scientific, and medical interactions between graduates of Mass General radiology training programs and their alma mater, as well as to foster greater communication among the graduates themselves.

Mass General Imaging's Global Health Programs are dedicated to addressing unmet medical imaging needs and healthcare disparities for vulnerable and crisis-affected populations.
