Overview of Breast Imaging

The Mass General Division of Breast Imaging is proud to offer a comprehensive breast imaging fellowship. We offer world-class staff, a wide variety of clinical cases, state-of-the-art technology and an in-house research program. Graduates of our fellowship program have been successful in both academic and private practice.

Breast Imaging Clinical Experience

As a breast imaging fellow, you will receive in-depth training in all aspects of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, ultrasound, MRI and image-guided interventions. We were the first institution in the United States to offer breast tomosynthesis, which was pioneered at Mass General, and we are proud to have transitioned early to an "all tomosynthesis" practice. Interventional procedures include the latest technology in stereotactic and tomosynthesis-guided minimally invasive biopsy, in addition to ultrasound and MRI-guided interventions.

We are a large clinical practice with diverse patient populations and serve as a global referral center for challenging clinical cases and high-risk populations. Each day our division performs more than 170 screening mammograms, 50 diagnostic mammograms, 15 MRI cases and 8 to 12 interventions. These studies are obtained and reviewed with state-of-the-art technology.

At the hospital, we are continually developing and evaluating new technology and improved patient care systems. Examples include fast MRI, methods to replace wire localizations, enhanced reporting and patient tracking systems, improved methods of patient engagement and models for remote diagnostic clinical service provision. Our fellows are actively engaged in these projects and in enhanced methods of service delivery.

Our program in clinical service encourages engagement in outreach activities locally and globally. Through travel and/or teleradiology services, we provide opportunities for participation in programs that support our mission of addressing the unmet needs of our most vulnerable populations.

Breast Imaging Educational Experience

In addition to active learning in the clinic, our fellows and faculty participate in a wide variety of educational sessions. These educational opportunities include:

• Daily rounds to share and discuss interesting cases
• Noon conferences to discuss research, clinical operations and information technology
• Didactic and case conferences
• Journal club
• Hospital-wide breast rounds
• Multidisciplinary tumor board

In addition, our breast imaging fellows rotate on the breast surgery, pathology, medical oncology and radiation oncology services.

Breast Imaging Research Experience

There are numerous opportunities for fellows to engage in research. Our fellows receive protected academic time for their projects and support to present at national meetings. We offer on-site clinical research facilities with full-time dedicated research staff.

Ongoing research projects include technology assessment of digital breast tomosynthesis, ultrasound, MRI and optical and radiotracer/nuclear medicine imaging. In addition, we are actively engaged in population health studies in collaboration with primary care experts at Mass General. Our fellows benefit from and engage in multidisciplinary projects at the hospital and those that integrate expertise from across the Harvard Medical School and MIT campuses.

How to Apply to the Breast Imaging Fellowship

Timeline

Mass General participates in the Breast Imaging Fellowship Match. The Match is sponsored by the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and will be managed by the National Resident Matching Program.

Applications will be accepted between November 1 and December 15. Applicants will be notified via e-mail once all application materials are received. Virtual interviews will take place between January 8 and March 31.

Selection Process

The selection process involves an initial assessment of your CV, personal statement and letters of recommendation (please see Guidelines for Application Materials below). Selected applicants will be invited for virtual interviews. We currently offer six fellowship positions.

International Medical Graduates

International medical graduates are encouraged to apply for our fellowship. To be considered for a fellowship position, the applicant must be eligible for a full medical license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The requirements are listed on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website and include ECFMG certification.

  Please include reason(s) for training at Mass General and long-term career goals. Limit this statement to one page, single space with Arial 11 or Times 12 font and one-inch margins.
• 3 letters of recommendation (including letter from Residency Program Director)
• USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3; or FLEX Components 1 and 2; or NBME Parts I, II and III; or all parts of the MCCQE; or all parts of the examination of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
