The Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital offers several National Visiting Fellowships. These are designed to provide the postgraduate radiologist with an opportunity for specialized continuing education.

The National Visiting Fellows will participate in the functions of the various specialized sections of the department, working in a clinical and educational environment emphasizing current clinical practices, newer radiologic techniques, and the operation of state-of-the-art imaging modalities.

National Visiting Fellows may also have the option of a flexible course program, whereas they may choose to spend two days in one course and three days in another or, vice versa.

As an organization accredited for continuing medical education, the American College of Radiology certifies that this continuing medical education program meets the criteria for 40 credit hours per week in Category 1, provided it is completed as designed.

Abdominal imaging and visceral interventionCovers conventional contrast examination, body imaging with ultrasound, CT and MR, abdominal interventionial procedures including biopsies, abscess drainage, biliary interventions and gastrointestinal tract procedures including percutaneous gastrostomy and cholecystostomy. Comprehensive experience in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving the GU system including ultrasound, CT, MRI, prostate imaging, female infertility, and percutaneous interventional techniques.
Breast imagingThrough observation of the daily activities of the Breast Imaging Section, video tapes, a comprehensive teaching collection, and didactic sessions, the fellowship offers a comprehensive experience in film/screening imaging, breast ultrasound, CBT of the breast, and needle localization and core biopsy techniques. A practical approach to screening, detection and diagnosis is stressed.
Chest radiology
Comprehensive experience in chest disease, including CT, MRI, Intensive care radiology, and needle biopsy techniques.
Computed body tomographyCT of the chest, abdomen and skeletal system, involving interaction with various organ-based divisions (Thoracic, Abdominal, Pediatric, Skeletal and Emergency) within the department. CT guided intervention procedures, biopsies and drainages may be observed as well. Offered one week per month to a maximum of four fellows.
Emergency radiology
Comprehensive experience imaging acute traumatic and non-traumatic conditions in the Emergency Radiology Division. This fellowship emphasizes newer imaging modalities in the diagnosis and evaluation of trauma, especially computed tomography, and three-dimensional computed tomography utilizing an advantage Windows workstation. Emergency Radiology visiting fellows will receive instruction during didactic teaching sessions, daily film review, teaching collection conferences, trauma rounds, and observation of procedures. An extensive emergency radiology teaching collection is available for review. Handout materials include copies of emergency radiology filming protocols, including helical CT trauma protocols.
Neuroimaging and neuroradiologyAn opportunity for complete and intensive exposure to basic and advanced clinical neuroimaging at Mass General where the neurological and neurosurgical case load is outstanding in complexity and volume. Teaching is conducted by a highly experienced staff of nine neuroradiologists involving all modern imaging modalities for the study of the brain, head & neck and spine including structural and functional MRI & MRA, CT, cerebral and spinal angiography, myelography, clinical PET, neuroembolization and cerebrovascular disease evaluation by ultrasound. Learning opportunities include multiple daily film review sessions, protocol development, observation of procedures and daily teaching conferences. Highlights include (a) regular consultative conferences involving world renowned faculty from neuroradiology, neurology, neurosurgery and neuropathology (b) clinical applications of functional MRI in acute stroke, brain tumors and dementia (c) weekly brain cutting neuropathology correlative conference (d) weekly Neurosurgery Grand Rounds and Neurology Grand Rounds in the famous Ether Dome. Self-instructional materials are also available.
Nuclear medicine | nuclear cardiologyObservation of daily activities on a busy clinical service and attendance at daily conferences. Visiting Fellows participate in the interpretation of studies throughout the day. Continuous interaction with staff nuclear medicine physicians provides insights into current practice and interpretive approaches, although no teaching collection materials or specific didactic sessions are scheduled.
Pediatric radiology
A comprehensive, educational experience emphasizing clinical correlations with all aspects of pediatric imaging, emergency room, intensive care, CT (16 detector), MR (both 1.5T and 3T) and ultrasound, including observation of invasive and interventional procedures and sedation. Instruction in advanced techniques of pediatric cardiovascular imaging (CT and MR), neuroimaging including spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging, tractography and functional brain imaging, MR Urography and Cholangiography, musculoskeletal imaging including sports medicine, digital 3D image rendition and processing. Technique and radiation dose optimization for specific imaging tasks will be emphasized. The fellow will be encouraged to keep a log of interesting cases, which will be provided on a CD-ROM at the end of the fellowship.
Imaging informaticsComprehensive experience in the areas of Picture Archiving Communications Systems (PACS), Voice Recognition technology and installation, Internet Image Distribution and Teleradiology, Image and Medical Management. Observation during all technical sessions and management meeting surrounding cost reduction, implementation strategies and metric analysis. Direct exposure to soft copy primary interpretation including state-of-the-art voice recognition and next generation technology through the Mass General Advanced Imaging Laboratory facilities.
Skeletal radiologyComprehensive experience in medical and surgical bone and joint disease including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, bone biopsy and other interventional procedures, and orthopedic evaluation.
Vascular radiology: Diagnosis and interventionObservation of procedures, participation in work conferences and one-to-one teaching tailored to the specific needs of each visiting fellow. Procedures and topics include angioplasty, regional thrombolysis, super selective catheterization techniques, transcatheter embolization,inferior vena cava filter placement, general diagnostic angiography, stent placement/ TIPS, venous access, chemoembolization, collaborative intraoperative placement of stent grafts of the aorta (thoracic and abdominal), ultrasound duplex imaging and color doppler, CT and MR imaging of blood vessels.

Tuition

• Fellowships are offered during the academic year for one to six month periods. There are no National Visiting Fellowships available during the months of July and August.
• Tuition is $750/week.
• Fellows wishing additional experience may elect to stay for longer periods or return during the current academic year for a reduced tuition.
• Tuition is payable on confirmation of acceptance.
