Once a last resort for epilepsy because it was so difficult and risky, surgery is now a more viable option for patients of all ages as reported in The Boston Globe. Recent advances in imaging have enabled surgeons to be more certain where seizures originate in the brain, which tissue they can cut safely, and how to minimize damage along the way.
“Advances of imaging have really changed the way we think about things, turning children we didn’t think about as surgical candidates into surgical candidates — and surgery can be a cure,” said Dr. Elizabeth Thiele, director of the pediatric epilepsy program at Massachusetts General Hospital.
