Research at Mass General
What can the Mass General Postdoc Association do for you? Carla D'Avanzo, PhD, the Advising Chair of the MGPA, talks about what she's learned from being a part of the organization, and encourages other postdocs to find out more.

“Being part of the Massachusetts General Hospital Postdoc Association (MGPA) for three years, first as a social media and networking committee volunteer and then as co-Chair, definitely made an impact on my postdoc experience and on the decisions about my future career.
The MGPA serves the Mass General postdoctoral community for research and career development related matters and is a referral point for building a strong postdoctoral and professional network.
An executive board committee, comprised of three volunteer postdocs and a Mass General administrative officer, works together with the volunteer members of six subcommittees to organize career development events and to communicate with postdocs.
The MGPA runs monthly events on topics such as careers in academia, science communication, relationships with industry, management consulting, matters relating to international medical students and professional networking.
Thanks to the MGPA, I gained organizational and leadership skills that are not easy to acquire during daily lab life. I learned to organize meetings, such as panel discussions with experts in different topics, and to work as part of a team to make an event successful. I also grew my personal and professional network.
In my years as a MGPA member, I have been exposed to many different career paths for a postdoc in life sciences, and had chance to talk with people working in different roles. This made me more informed and confident about what I like and what I’m keener to pursue in my future career.
I strongly encourage any Mass General postdoc to contact the MGPA and share their interests and ideas. You can email us at email@example.com, or connect with us on social media (Facebook and LinkedIn).”

There are different ways to get involved with the association:
Don't miss the MGPA's annual meeting: Thursday, January 26 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in Simches 3.110. This year, we will have two speakers: Marcia Goldberg, MD, the new director of the Postdoctoral Division at Mass General, and world-renowned researcher George Valliant, MD (Harvard University and Brigham & Women's Hospital), who will discuss the "science of happiness" and depression and stress in postdoctoral fellows.
