Research at Mass General
Come to the Kids for a Cure benefit dinner at Palmer's Crossing Restaurant in Larchmont, NY on June 24, 2013. Proceeds benefit diabetes research at the Faustman Laboratory at Mass General.
MHS Kids for the Cure is a club that devotes its time to fundraising for specific research conducted by Dr. Denise Faustman of Mass General Hospital, called the Faustman Lab. The lab is moving into Phase II of critical research in finding a cure for Type I Diabetes.
I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when I was eight years old.
Type I Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's own immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin. Rarer than Type II Diabetes, Type I is more severe, and accounts for approximately 10 - 15 % of cases worldwide.
There is currently no cure or preventative measure for Type I Diabetes. Patients are dependent for the rest of their lives on regular injections of insulin to control their blood sugar levels.
