The Skeletal Biology Research Center (SBRC) was founded by Dr. Leonard Kaban in 1994. Dr. Kaban recognized that patient care can only be improved when mechanisms are studied and understood.
SBRC does pioneering work to apply advances in biomedical engineering, biomechanics, tissue engineering, and computer-aided surgical planning to the art of reconstruction of congenital and acquired facial deformities. Through the SBRC, we collaborate with colleagues in academia, healthcare and industry to refine and adapt the latest medical technologies for use in the restricted domain of the face and jaws. Our aim is to improve outcomes and quality of life for adults and children in need of reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. We use minimally invasive surgical techniques coupled with computer-aided treatment planning to reduce the magnitude of surgical procedures and surgical trauma;to improve outcomes with more accurate bone movement and to improve the rate and quality of healing. The goal of the SBRC is to understand all mechanisms related to the head and neck structures.
