Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory

The Massachusetts General Hospital Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory is a specialized service facility practicing FDA-approved Good Manufacture Procedure (cGMP) standards to manufacture human pancreatic islets.

Overview

The Massachusetts General Hospital Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory is a specialized service facility providing services for research and clinical care use, and the only lab in New England that practices the FDA-approved current Good Manufacture Procedure (cGMP) standards. We are one of few active laboratories in the United States that collaborates within the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Consortium of Islet Transplantation (CIT) and its affiliates to advance clinical islet transplantation from an experimental to a standard care procedure.

Since its inception in 2008, the Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory has processed more than 160 human pancreata in a state-of-the-art cGMP facility for use in clinical islet transplantation, as well as research. We continue to optimize the process of islet isolation to ensure the best patient outcomes. Our first type I diabetic patient is more than five years post allogenic pancreatic islet transplantation, with a functioning graft and is insulin-independent.

In 2011, we expanded our program to provide autologous human islet isolation to patients undergoing total pancreatectomy. This approach is an innovative and very successful therapeutic option for cases of chronic pancreatitis that have not responded to conventional intervention. To date, approximately 30 patients from Mass General, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center of Dartmouth Medical School have benefited from this revolutionary technology.

We have conducted a variety of experimental studies on pancreatic islet transplantation in primate, porcine and rodent models. We collaborate with researchers nationally to provide high quality nonhuman primate (NHP) islets for research. Our extensive experience in areas such as tolerance induction, encapsulation of islets, large/small animal surgery, islet isolation and animal care allow us to be an ideal contractor or resource center for related studies.

Services

The Massachusetts General Hospital Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory provides the following services to Mass General, Harvard-affiliated hospitals and research facilities, and other clinical and research institutions throughout the United States:

  1. Allogeneic human islet isolation for clinical transplantation to treat severe type I diabetes mellitus
  2. Autologous human islet isolation for clinical transplantation to prevent surgical diabetes after a total pancreatectomy
  3. Human islet isolation for research to provide normal, type I/II diabetic pancreatic islets to researchers worldwide
  4. Large animal islet isolation with expertise in nonhuman primate (NHP) islet isolation and porcine islet isolation
  5. Small animal islet isolation with expertise in mice and rat islet isolation of any strains and age
  6. Experimental islet transplant models, which are well established NHP and small animal transplantation models. Contracted research has been conducted at the facility for several years
