Dr. Katherine Hesse grew up in Oregon, but has lived on the East Coast for about 30 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree (BA), her Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW), and her Medical degree (MD) from the University of Connecticut. Her medical training was completed at Mount Auburn Hospital, and she did her fellowship in geriatric medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Hesse’s experiences caring for older patients in the social work setting inspired her interest to learn more about aging and what can be done to improve the physical and social lives of older adults. When she chose to pursue a career in medicine, she already knew she wanted to work in geriatrics. She has now been practicing for over 20 years. Prior to coming to MGH Senior Health 6 years ago, Dr. Hesse practiced at Mount Auburn Hospital and then at Deaconess Hospital.

Dr. Hesse finds the mix of patient care, administration, and teaching opportunities to be the most rewarding part of her job. Working with a team of other health care professionals in areas such as psychiatry, nursing, social work, and rehabilitation therapy is something she finds to be a unique opportunity that comes with caring for older adults.

When she is not caring for her patients and their families, Dr. Hesse enjoys gardening, needlepoint, reading, and writing.

“As medical director of the practice, I am very interested in seeing that the concerns of the patients, their families, support staff and professionals are recognized and met to the best of our ability.”
