Sports Injuries: Turf Toe

THE INJURY
Turf toe is caused by a severe dorsiflexion (upward bending) of the base of the great toe. It can result in pain and swelling with subsequent stiffness of the toe. Pain with running and even walking can develop. Initial treatment consists of ice and limiting the motion of the great toe. Starting motion as soon as pain allows will help prevent stiffness. An X-ray will evaluate whether there is an associated fracture. If severe, long-term problems can include limited and painful range of motion of the great toe.
