Elizabeth Rider

Medicine is Dr. Rider’s second career. She has been a clinician, clinical teacher, and educator for over 25 years, first as a clinical social worker and then as a pediatrician. Dr. Rider designs and leads educational programs and provides resident and faculty development and clinical teaching for medical students at Harvard Medical School (HMS). She is Co-Director, Communication Skills Teaching Program and Coordinator of Faculty Development, Resident as Teacher Program. She serves as Faculty for the Patient-Doctor III course and for the Harvard Macy Program for Physician Educators. Dr. Rider was awarded the HMS Morgan–Zinsser Teaching Award in 2001 and 2002.

Dr. Rider works nationally to improve the patient–doctor relationship. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy on Physician and Patient; Advisory Board of the John D. Stoeckle Center for Primary Care Innovation, MGH; as a National Pediatric Faculty Development Scholar; and as a member of the Bayer–Fetzer Group on Physician–Patient Communication in Medical Education.

She is the Pediatric Editor for Medical Encounter, and Reflective Practice (Narratives) Editor for Patient Education and Counseling. Dr. Rider was elected to the National Academy of Practice in Medicine in 2003 as a Distinguished Practitioner, one of 100 physicians in this Academy.

Dr. Rider has a pediatric practice, and was recently selected by her peers to be included as one of 4% of U.S. physicians in Best Doctors.
