About Our Stroke Service
A central mission of the MGH Stroke Service is to advance the understanding and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. We are committed to promoting the education of our medical students, residents, fellows, physicians and nurses and administrative staff. In addition, there has been a long-standing commitment to welcoming and educating visitors from other institutions as they observe our clinical activities.
Observers
'Observers' include physicians, trainees, medical students, nurses, industry staff, medical representatives, and other visitors who are not affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Partners Healthcare, or Harvard Medical School (HMS), who wish to observe the activities of the MGH Stroke and Neuro-ICU services.
In general we welcome applications from those who have completed neurology training, practicing stroke/neuro ICU physicians or nurses, and industry personnel. Due to the overwhelming demand for observerships and commitment to educate our own residents and fellows, we are unable to consider unsolicited observership requests from recent medical school graduates and those seeking US-based hospital experience prior to joining internal medicine or neurology residency. Medical students who wish to arrange rotating internships or neurology clinical clerkships at MGH should contact the Registrar’s Office at Harvard Medical School. Neurology or internal medicine residents who wish to arrange an elective rotation during their training should contact the MGH Neurology Residency program coordinator.
Program Overview
While we will try our best to accommodate your requested dates and activities of interest, this may not always be possible due to the high demand for stroke service observerships. Observers are not permitted to participate in direct patient care and are required to adhere to the Hospital’s policy on patient privacy and confidentiality. Observers are welcome to attend our educational activities. These include the weekly stroke/ICU conferences on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, Neurology Department Grand Rounds in the historic Ether Dome on Thursday mornings, Neuropathology conferences on Friday mornings, Neuroradiology rounds on Thursday afternoons, Neurovascular conferences on Friday mornings, and monthly Vascular Center rounds. We request all observers to maintain a log of all stroke service activities attended. At the end of the rotation, we will provide a letter acknowledging the duration of the visit and the clinical activities observed.
Requirements
An appropriate U.S. entry visa is mandatory. If accepted for the observership, we will provide the necessary documents to support your visa application. Depending on the duration of their visit, Observers may be required to undergo an occupational health check-up and a security check prior to the start of the visit.
