Safe passage: Several members of the MGH, Massachusetts legislators and ATV child-safety advocates

On Oct. 21, members of the MGH and MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) gathered with state legislators and advocates to commemorate the passage of three Massachusetts child-safety laws. Along with acknowledging the importance of laws to promote driving safety for teens and concussion awareness in schools, attendees paid a special tribute to the passage of Sean's Law, which prohibits children under the age of 14 from operating all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

Attendees included Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president; David C. Torchiana, MD, MGPO chairman and CEO; Peter Masiakos, MD, MGHfC surgeon; state Sen. Steven A. Baddour; and state Reps. Viriato deMacedo, Peter J. Koutoujian and Michael A. Costello. Also in attendance were special guests Mark and Katie Kearney, whose 8-year-old son Sean died after an ATV accident in 2006, and Carolyn Anderson, co-founder of Concerned Families for ATV Safety, who lost her son in a similar accident. Along with Masiakos, who cared for Sean at MGHfC, Anderson and the Kearneys were tireless advocates for the lawís passage.
