Research
MGH Thoracic Aortic Center participants have contributed extensively to creating new knowledge. A unique method of spinal cord protection has been developed and is used to minimize the risk of neurologic deficit associated with extensive thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair. The Center's aortic surgical expertise includes considerable experience with composite aortic root replacement, new approaches to aortic valve preservation in acute dissection, and favorable results with traumatic aortic tears. Finally, investigations in progress include a Phase II trial of the recently available thoracic aortic stent-graft, evaluation of stent graft treatment of type B dissections, and neuropsychologic outcomes following hypothermic circulatory arrest for repair of aortic arch pathology.
