Overview

The Mass General TeleNeurology program has a clinically-driven technology platform consisting of three components. These, are fully modular, which allows flexible installations to best meet the needs of a given partner. By focusing on a cost-effective solution to provide the highest level of care, our technology implementations are designed to remove barriers its delivery.  Refined over 15 years of clinical use, our technical solutions prioritize effectiveness and reliability to ensure that neurologists are able to provide care when it is needed most.

The Mass General TeleNeurology technical support model has been developed and refined over 15 years of telestroke consults. A high-impact, low-volume situation such as stroke entails that systems must be regularly tested, as there is little time for troubleshooting when lives are on the line. When technical difficulties are encountered, Mass General TeleNeurology program handles investigation and resolution in collaboration with technical consultants in order to ensure the highest standards of care are upheld.

TeleHealth Portal

The internally developed, secure Mass General TeleHealth Portal

The Mass General TeleNeurology program uses a web portal to connect providers and members of the TeleNeurology network. The portal provides a platform to allow physicians to perform consults and share medical notes with network members, despite inherent interoperability barriers. The Mass General TeleHealth portal is built internally at Mass General using state-of-the-art technology with close guidance from clinical leaders. This tools is itself modular in its design, with functionality to:

  • Decision support tools that ensure compliance to clinical protocols
  • Interoperable documentation, retrieval and collection of user input/feedback
  • Activity, performance and value tracking and data exporting
  • Enable one-click access to other essential documents and technologies
  • Automate critical administrative tasks: service renewals and MD credentialing
  • In special cases, customize to other clinical areas

Furthermore, the Mass General TeleHealth portal can also be customized in special cases, to enable automated integrations to your EHR, and your own design of clinical templates, workflows and analytics reports.

Video-Conferencing

Videoconferencing is the key component that allows clinicians to perform a real-time, interactive consult. The Mass General TeleNeurology program mainly utilizes the Vidyo Videoconferencing Platform, which allows interoperability with all other standard videoconferencing systems, such as Tandberg, Polycom, and Cisco. Vidyo provides both hardware and software solutions. Hardware solutions are preferred in emergency departments because their dedicated purpose makes them more reliable and user-friendly in a time-sensitive situation. Vidyo codecs are typically installed on medical-grade carts outfitted with high-resolution cameras, microphones, speakers, a display, and networking capabilities. While deploying a new cart is a straight-forward process, Vidyo’s interoperability allows a member hospital to utilize an existing videoconferencing system if desired. In order to connect to consults, providing clinicians typically utilize Vidyo’s software, which can be used from any networked computer or even a mobile device, such as a tablet. The flexibility of the software solution allows physicians a greater degree of availability. With features such as far-end camera control and ultra-high-resolution cameras, videoconferencing solutions allow clinicians to perform consults as if they were present in the room.

TeleRadiology

A TeleRadiology Solution

One of the most important pieces of information a neurologist can have while performing a consult is either a CT scan or MRI of a patient’s brain. Teleradiology refers to the process developed to share this information between providers. Our processes allow a member hospital to securely send images directly to our radiology server. In turn, these images are made available through the lifeIMAGE cloud viewer, which allows provider physicians accessibility anywhere they have internet connectivity.
