Transplant Center has record year

2013 was a record-breaking year for the MGH Transplant Center with 207 transplants performed. The previous record was set in 2012 with 170 transplants.

According to data recently released by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the 22 percent growth also has landed MGH in the top spot for most transplants performed in the region, not only in 2013 but also in the national organization’s nearly 30-year history of recording transplant volume.

Joren C. Madsen, MD, DPhil, director of the hospital’s Transplant Center, says the growth is due to an alignment of processes that includes care redesign, outreach, personnel recruitment and the efforts of the entire Transplant Center staff who work tirelessly to go above and beyond, each and every day.

“The more transplants we do here at the MGH, the more lives are saved,” Madsen says. “Everyone who is affiliated with the Transplant Center has a hand in that. The care for each transplant patient involves a minimum of 15 disciplines or role groups throughout the referral, evaluation, listing, transplant and post-transplant phases. It truly ‘takes a village.’ We provide first class patient care and as you can see, the results are inspiring.”
