Confronting Cold and Flu Season: Advice for Transplant Recipients

Organ transplant recipients take powerful medications that suppress their immune systems. These medications also diminish the body's ability to fight infection, making recipients more susceptible to illnesses like colds and flu.

Patients can take some precautions to avoid infection, especially during the winter months, by:

  • Avoiding people with colds or flu
  • Avoiding crowded areas (such as malls and public transportation)
  • Wearing a mask in high-risk areas
  • Getting a flu vaccine

In this video, Dr. Camille Kotton, an infectious disease specialist with the Mass General Hospital Transplant Center, offers more advice to transplant recipients and their families on how to stay healthy during the winter months.
