Basic and Clinical Research at the Transplant Center
Massachusetts General Hospital Transplant Center research programs are integrated across all organs and include basic scientific and clinical research.
The focus of the Transplant Center's research surrounds "tolerance induction" in organ transplantation, methods of preparing a patient's immune system prior to organ transplantation so that transplant recipients will not need to take medications that prevent rejection of transplanted organs.
Researchers in the Transplant Center have been pioneering studies in cell transplantation, xenograft transplantation and gene therapy. Multiple exciting clinical trials and special clinical protocols are in progress at the Transplant Center.
The Transplant Center is nationally recognized for establishing:
- New England's first liver transplant program in 1983
- New England's first pancreas transplant program in 1986
- New England's first bowel transplant program in 1991
- The world's first successful tolerance induction program in 1998
