Products to Help You Stop Smoking

There are seven FDA-approved products for smoking cessation. These products increase the success rates of smokers who are trying to quit.

Nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, includes the nicotine patch, nicotine gum, nicotine lozenge, nicotine nasal spray, and the nicotine inhaler.

Nicotine patches, nicotine lozenges, and nicotine gum can be purchased over-the-counter at most drugstores, although some insurance plans will help cover the cost if the patient obtains a prescription from his or her health care provider. In addition, nicotine patches and nicotine gum are available at very low cost for those who are participating in the outpatient behavioral counseling program at the MGH TTS.

Nicotine nasal spray and the nicotine inhaler are available by prescription only.

Bupropion SR (also known as Zyban or Wellbutrin SR) is another drug that is FDA-approved to help people stop smoking. It is a pill that can be used by itself or in combination with NRT. Buproprion SR is available by prescription only. Chantix (also known as Varenicline) is the newest drug that has been FDA-approved to help people stop smoking. Chantix is available by prescription only.
