Our Services

Group Counseling Program:
For smokers who are ready to quit, group programs are led by trained counselors. The programs consist of 7 one-hour sessions. An individual assessment helps each person develop a tailored plan to meet his or her needs. Group size is generally 8 to 10 participants. Sessions cover counseling for behavior change, social support for nonsmoking, stress management techniques, and medication monitoring. New programs begin each month and are offered early evenings (5:30-6:30 pm) and afternoons (12:00-1:00 pm and 2:00-3:00 pm). All sessions are held on the MGH Main Campus, which is easily accessible by public transportation as well as by car.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT):
Nicotine patches and gum are available at low cost for those who are participating in the outpatient behavioral counseling program. Each smoker's physician or nurse practitioner provides written medical approval for the use of nicotine replacement therapy.

Inpatient Counseling Program:
Smoking counseling is available at the bedside for MGH inpatients who smoke. Counselors provide tailored therapy to help patients manage their withdrawal symptoms while hospitalized and help those interested in quitting take the appropriate steps toward success. Consultations include smoking management or smoking cessation assistance as well as pharmacotherapy recommendations and post-discharge referrals, as appropriate. If you are a healthcare provider and wish to refer a patient, click here (only available within the Partners system) or call 617-726-7443. If you are a patient currently hospitalized at MGH and would like to see a Tobacco Treatment Service Counselor please call 617-726-7443.
