We are a multi-disciplinary team with the expertise to help smokers succeed at quitting.
We look forward to working with you!


Nancy Rigotti, MD, Director
Nancy Rigotti is the founder and director of the MGH TTS. As a physician, she has worked for two decades to help her patients stop smoking and to train other physicians and nurses to do the same. She has done extensive research in smoking cessation methods and policies, and she is a well-known national expert in the field of tobacco control.


Michele Reyen, MPH, Program Manager
Michele Reyen is the program manager for the MGH TTS, as well as a health educator. She has a Master's Degree in Public Health, specializing in social and behavior sciences. Prior to coming to MGH Michele worked in public health at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.


Kathleen McKool, RN, MSN, Counselor
Kathleen McKool has worked with Dr. Rigotti since 1986. Her clinical experience includes intensive individual counseling with patients who have complex medical conditions, group programs, and telephone counseling. She has worked on research projects using nicotine replacement, bupropion, and other drugs and counseling in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She is an instructor for the Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training and Certification Program. Her specialty is cardiovascular nursing, and she also works at the MGH Cardiology Department's Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Center.


Joanna Hilgenberg, LCSW, CTTS-M, Counselor
Joanna Hilgenberg is a full time smoking cessation counselor providing bedside counseling to smokers who are hospitalized at MGH. In addition, Joanna leads employee, afternoon, and evening outpatient tobacco cessation groups. She has a background in both nursing and clinical social work. As a social work intern Joanna provided individual counseling and worked with families of psychiatric patients. She also provided counseling at a local university. She has completed the Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Master's level certification.


Nancy McCleary, RN, CTTS-M, Counselor
Nancy McCleary has worked in the field of smoking cessation since 1990. Prior to working at MGH she worked at North Shore Medical Center for 15 years, where she counseled both inpatients and outpatients. She was part of a team that developed and initiated the Smoking Cessation Service at NSMC. In addition to working as a smoking cessation counselor at MGH doing individual inpatient counseling and leading tobacco cessation groups, she also works with Dr. Rigotti on various research studies involving tobacco treatment. She has completed the Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Master's level certification.


Jean E. Mizer, RN, Counselor
Jean has worked in the field of Tobacco Treatment since 2005. Prior to working at Massachusetts General Hospital she worked at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center for eleven years. Here at MGH she is doing individual inpatient counseling and leading outpatient tobacco cessation groups. She has completed the Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Basic training and is working toward her certification as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Master's level.


Ann Richards, Program Coordinator
Ann Richards is the program coordinator of the MGH TTS. She recently graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Health and Society. Prior to working for the Tobacco Treatment Service, she completed an internship with the Women's Sports Foundation. She has completed the Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Basic Training.


Karen Silva, Program Coordinator
Karen has been at Massachusetts General Hospital for several years, most recently with the Institute for Health Policy. She provides administrative and technical support for Dr. Rigotti and several members of the Tobacco Treatment Service. Karen has a Bachelor's of Art Degree with a concentration in English from Salem State College.
