Learn About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction may be due to a variety of causes. It can be caused by psychological issues, poor blood flow, malfunctioning nerves, hormonal imbalance, alterations in erectile tissue of the penis and medication. Alterations in blood flow with some contribution from nerve and erectile tissue is perhaps the most common cause. Blood flow may be determined non-invasively by using a doppler ultrasound machine, which is available in our office.

The treatment of impotence generally begins with medication therapy. Oral medication and/or locally applied drugs are usually the first step. Other methods involve injecting the penis with a drug or the use of a vacuum device. At the MGH we have a special service for the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder, which is separated from the general urology area to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality. Some patients benefit from instruction in the performance of injection therapy or the use of the vacuum device. This instruction is provided by a physician specialist. Surgical therapies, which include the placement of penile prosthesis, are also available.
