Kidney Stone
Kidney stones can be very painful and may cause considerable
disability. Stones in the urinary track are classified according to their
composition and site of origin. For the most part, stones form in the kidney
and are passed into the ureter (the tube from the kidney to the bladder) where
they may become lodged and cause pain.
Stones may be composed of calcium oxalate, calcium oxalate plus phosphate, magnesium ammonium phosphate, uric acid, or calcium phosphate. Rarely other substances may comprise the stone.
The treatment is twofold 1) to rid the patient of the stone causing the problem and 2) to prevent new stones from forming.
At the MGH we have all the facilities and technology with physicians who specialize in this area necessary to deal with the most complex problem. Stone prevention is addressed by a renal medical physician who specializes in this area.
