Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in
the male. The cumulative life time risk of developing prostate cancer is 11%.
The overwhelming majority of prostate cancer cases are due to adenocarcinoma.
The cancer is graded by the pathologist and given a score from 2-10 (Gleason
Score), with 2, the least aggressive and 10, the most aggressive. The prostate
cancer treatment of a particular patient is determined by the patient's age,
the grade of the tumor, and its extent.
At the MGH a multidisciplinary consultation is available which includes expert physicians from Urology, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. The methods of treatment available include nerve sparing open prostatectomy, nerve sparing laparoscopic prostatectomy, brachytherapy (seed implant) and conformal external beam radiation therapy. The type of prostate cancer treatment is tailored to the patient.
