MGH physician offers tips on avoiding deep vein thrombosis

Many people may soon find themselves on buses, trains or planes on the way to their holiday destination. But what they may not know is that sitting motionless for long periods of time can put them at risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs when a blood clot develops in a vein deep in the body. Dr. Michael R. Jaff, chair of the Mass General Institute for Heart, Vascular and Stroke Care, outlines the signs and symptoms of DVT as well as some helpful tips on how people can lessen their risk of developing this common but serious vascular condition that afflicts up to two million Americans annually.
