This course will prepare the new parent for childbirth. Knowing what to expect and being prepared can make your birth experience more enjoyable. You will learn about the last few months of pregnancy, signs that you are in labor, the labor process, when to go to the hospital and what your hospital stay will be like. Information is given about comfort measures, medications, anesthesia, and medical procedures. Relaxation techniques, coping strategies and breathing are also covered in class. The initial postpartum phase, both physically and emotionally, is reviewed. During the class you will take a tour of the OB Mother-Child Center.
This class is offered in various formats described below:
- Option #1: A five class weekly series. Come one evening a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) for five weeks. Class time: 6:30-8:30pm
- Option #2: A weekend intensive class. Come take a weekend class (Sat and Sun). Class time: 9am-3pm both days.
- Option #3: A one-day intensive class. Come for one Saturday. Class time: 8am-4pm.
- We will provide you with course materials, and a tour of the OB unit.
- You may want to bring a water bottle and/or a snack.
Dress comfortably. Some people find it helpful to bring a small pillow (on the weekend or one day class) to make sitting for a long time more comfortable.
- Please provide lunch on your own. You will have an hour lunch break. There is a cafeteria and restaurants nearby.
