May M. Wakamatsu, MD
Chief, Vincent Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Division

MD Degree: Case Western Reserve University

Special Interest:  Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Urogynecology

Memberships include: Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society , American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrical Society of Boston, and American Urogynecological Society

Comment: As a result of the technologies and surgical procedures we are developing — such as a new minimally invasive vaginal vault suspension and minimally invasive sling procedures — we can have an immediate impact on the lives of women who have urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. It is rewarding to help a woman eliminate pads and to make it possible for her to travel, play golf, run, or get back to a normal life.

Comment: It is an exciting opportunity to be able to improve the quality of life for women who suffer from pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. Today, the minimally invasive procedures we perform can help a patient return to the active lifestyle they are used to, while minimizing operative times, recovery times, and complications.

Lori R. Berkowitz, MD

MD Degree: Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia

Residency: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Brown University

Board Certification: Obstetrics and Gynecology

Other:

  • Program director of the Integrated OBGYN Residency Training Program at the MGH and Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
  • Member American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, American Urogynecologic Society, Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics/Council on Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Boston Magazine 2004 Best of Boston recognition as top "up-and-coming" obstetrcian/gynecologist.

Comment: Gynecologic pelvic reconstructive surgery is extremely rewarding because of its complexity and rapid ability to greatly improve the quality of women's lives. My clinical interest in postpartum reconstructive surgery has enabled me to travel to Niger to perform surgical repairs for young women whose bodies have been catastrophically damaged as the result of childbirth within an environment of insufficient medical care. These women have so little, and being able to give them back some dignity is fulfilling, and a humble reminder of things we take for granted everyday.

Comment: In the Urogynecology Service, the sense of understanding, compassion, empathy comes from the top down. We try to create a sense of safety, a culture of acceptance. I want to hear about everything my patients are going through, all of the details, and I encourage them to talk to me without fear or embarrassment.
